Aqua is a system-wide dictation layer for Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android. On a Mac or Windows PC, hold a key with Claude open and speak, and your prompt appears in the box fully formed, in the desktop app or a browser tab. Aqua works in the Claude app on your phone too.
Does Claude have built-in voice dictation?
Some. Claude Desktop on Mac can take dictation through Quick Entry, and Claude Code has its own hold-to-talk voice input tuned for coding. Both are scoped to Anthropic's own surfaces, and Claude's voice features are built for talking to an assistant rather than for getting text into whatever you happen to be writing. That is the distinction worth understanding: Aqua does not talk to Claude, it types for you. The same key fills the Claude prompt, the document you are drafting from Claude's answer, and the Slack message where you share it.
How to dictate in Claude with Aqua
- Download Aqua for Mac or Windows and grant microphone access, plus Accessibility access on macOS.
- Pick your hold-to-talk key in Aqua's settings.
- Open Claude in the desktop app or a browser and click into the prompt box.
- Hold your key, think out loud, and release. What you said arrives as a structured prompt you can read before sending.
- Add model names, project names, and domain terms to your custom dictionary.
Tips for dictating in Claude
- Talk through the problem rather than trying to compose the perfect prompt. Length is free when you are speaking, and context is what improves the answer.
- Say your constraints explicitly: the format you want back, the audience, what to leave out.
- Long system prompts and project instructions are the highest-value thing to dictate. They are the ones nobody writes at full length because typing them is tedious.
- The same key works in Projects, in the Claude iPhone app, and in whatever you paste the answer into next.
