Aqua is a system-wide dictation layer for Mac, Windows, and iPhone. Hold a key in whatever terminal Claude Code is running in and speak, and your instruction lands in the prompt. The same key works over SSH, in a tmux pane, and in every other app on the machine.

Does Claude Code have built-in voice dictation?

Yes. Anthropic shipped native voice dictation to Claude Code in March 2026: run /voice, hold Space, and your speech is transcribed into the prompt. It is well built and tuned for the job. Two things send people looking anyway. It requires a Claude.ai account, because the speech-to-text runs as an authenticated Anthropic service, and your audio is streamed to Anthropic's servers rather than processed on your machine. It is also Claude Code only, so the commit message, the PR description, and the Slack message where you explain the change are all back to typing. Aqua is one key for all of it.

How to dictate in Claude Code with Aqua

Download Aqua for Mac or Windows and grant microphone access, plus Accessibility access on macOS.
Pick your hold-to-talk key in Aqua's settings.
Open the terminal where Claude Code is running. Any terminal works: Ghostty, iTerm, Warp, Terminal, or the one inside your editor.
Hold your key, describe the task, and release. The text lands at the prompt.
Add your repo, package, and branch names to your custom dictionary.

Tips for dictating in Claude Code

Describe the outcome and the constraints, not the diff. Claude Code is better at deciding how than you are at dictating it.
Say which files are in scope. One spoken sentence saves a round trip.
Because Aqua works at the OS level, it dictates into a Claude Code session running on a remote box over SSH, where an in-app voice feature cannot reach.
Read destructive commands back before you confirm them. Speed is worth having, but not on rm.
