Does Google Docs have built-in voice dictation?
Yes. Google Docs has Voice typing under the Tools menu, and it is free. It comes with two catches that matter more than they sound. It only runs in Chrome, so Safari, Arc, Firefox, and the desktop wrappers are out, and it is a mode you enter: you open the tool, click the microphone, and you are dictating until you stop. Aqua is a key you hold, in any browser, and the same key works in the Slack tab next door and the email client behind it. It also reads the context on your screen, so a formal report and a rough set of notes do not come out in the same register.
How to dictate in Google Docs with Aqua
- Download Aqua for Mac or Windows and grant microphone access, plus Accessibility access on macOS.
- Pick your hold-to-talk key in Aqua's settings.
- Open your Google Doc in any browser and place the cursor.
- Hold your key, speak, and release. No tool menu, no mode to exit.
- Add names, project terms, and anything your field uses that a general model would not know to your custom dictionary.
Tips for dictating in Google Docs
- Use it for the first draft, where the gap between thinking speed and typing speed is widest.
- Speak headings out loud as headings and then apply the style. Trying to dictate formatting is more effort than applying it.
- It works in comments and suggestions too, which is where most collaborative writing time actually goes.
- Because it is not a mode, you can dictate one sentence, type the next, and dictate again without toggling anything.

I find @aquavoice_ ’s voice dictation excellent for vibe coding. The effectiveness of vibing scales with how much context you can feed into the LLM. You can speak 3–4x more words per minute than you can type, and Aqua nails the low-friction experience voice needs to actually work.
